IF Comp '08 Review - Emilian Kowalewski's Project Delta!
I believe the competition ends tomorrow (then again, I believe a lot of things) and I have three games left, so let’s get right into some Project Delta.
[spoilers begin here although if you haven’t played this by now you’re probably not going to]
Hello, Node-X interpreter. I am not going to let on that you intimidate me.
This is the prequel to “Project Delta: The Assignment” coming next year and first official text adventure scripted with the Node-X game system.
The Course is a demonstration of the game mechanics and sets the stage for a deeper plot involving a protagonist being part of a top secret military project taking place on fictitious locations inside Area 51.
If you say so, Node-X interpreter. Whatever you want.
Oooh, it’s offering me a chance to change the interface colors. Normally I would pass on that, but just a second before I read that bit, I was thinking how headache-inducing this light gray on black was going to be.

That’s racist! And, ooof, eye-hurty! We’ll have number three, “Sourcecode,” black on light gray. That is better.
Huh, instead of typing in EXAMINE WHATEVER I am given menu options? That’s interesting.
Concerning your character it is unknown at this point who you are or what your function is. The fact that you are female soldier of some kind in a secret military complex makes even a greater mystery to you.
Well, this is only the prequel. I’m sure they’ll have that sorted by the time the real thing comes out.
Guessing the author is not a native English speaker, so here’s the deal on the verb “to wear:” it implies removability. Wearing a hat is perfectly normal, wearing a frown is fine if a bit sad, but wearing a tattoo will raise eyebrows. You can sport one if you like, but it’s probably easier just to have one. You know those beta-testers that you have to have or your game will be shit? If English is not your first language, you should make sure it is one of theirs. Thank you.
I can see what’s in each of my hands by glancing at the bottom of the screen. That is sort of neat.
“Alright. Now follow me into the corridor to the training room where I will show you how to pick up and use items.”
…is this going to be difficult? I mean, in most games I just GET them and USE them.

OH SHIT WHAT DO I DO
Huh. Okay. This system is kind of interesting, actually, as it’s got more of an interface than the standard cursor prompt. Whether it needs more of an interface than the standard cursor prompt is extremely debatable, but at least it’s not another case of “hey you guys I wrote this thing that does exactly what an established system would do except it does it a hell of a lot less well.”
Still, it’s pretty much a demo, isn’t it? Do I have to start caring about it right now, or can I wait for the full version?
Oh, wow, turns out I’m left-handed, and the game is over. No score for you, demo game!
